The International Festival of Children and Adventure

Huaraz, Perú, is a paradise for adventure sports. There are 22,000 foot mountains, amazing rivers to kayak, beautiful trails through the mountains, and huge cliffs perfect for rock climbing. At the same time, it is a poor city, where hundreds of children work on the street and two dozen have no homes. The Festival works to improve these children’s quality of life through introducing them to adventure sports.

As anyone who work with street kids know, the phrase “I can’t” is a wall to change. Street kids say they “can’t” return home, go to school, or save the money to rent an apartment. Extreme sports tear apart this “I can’t.” After climbing an seemingly impossible 100 foot cliff or walking across a glacier at 18,000 feet, children learn that they are capable of doing anything they want.

The Festival invites children from all parts of Perú and from several other countries. It hosts competitions in rock climbing and several other sports, and winners receive outdoor equipment as prizes.

In 2001, several Peruvian corporations sponsored the festival, but directors are now looking for other sponsors.
