Dance Project

The Dance Project is yet another program of the Belém Education Department. It come out of the same philosophy that animates Cores de Belém, Lazer, the Sports School, and the Cabana School.

The Project began when several educators noticed that the poor in Belém could not participate in the arts -- performances and classes were too expensive. The city has a long tradition of dance, but poor people never went to the theater or to dance studios. The Project gives free classes in modern and traditional Dance to poor children (almost all girls) and teaches them how to understand and appreciate dance.

As with all programs of the Education Department, the fundamental goal is to provide the tools for a happy life. The program does not train professional dancers, but provides a space for poor children to be recognized in the city. The arts also give poor children a chance to explore their fantasies and imagine a different future.
