María's Place

Estancia de María (Mary’s Place) began its work with homeless mothers and families, but soon realized that children needed a place to be while their mothers got on with their lives. For this reason, it expanded it programs to include food and shelter for street boys and girls, and for those at risk of homelessness. Today, the shelter houses some 125 children, mostly for brief periods of time, until they can return to their families.

Estancia believes that its most important work is preventative. Educators, nuns, and psycologists work with families and couples in crisis. They teach conflict resolution, how to save money, and how to treat one’s children and family well, even when times get tough. This counselling has dramatically reduced abuse and homelessness among clients.

The program gives workshops in job and relationship skills. In addition to conselling parents, Estancia also provides help with finding a better job, so that mothers can earn the necessary income to properly care for their children.
