Though youth homelessness has recently become a topic of important academic research, few grass roots organizations have been able to take advantage of this new knowledge about street children. Brasil, the one country where research and direct services are closely linked, has developed the best and most effective programs for street children, and Shine a light hopes to encourage this model.
Shine a light works to support researchers, to help them find the subjects that will best aid street children, to connect researchers with each other, and to strengthen the links between research, social services, and social movements.
In these pages, you will find
- detailed descriptions of the 230 organizations with which SAL collaborates
- essays on the realities of street life in a dozen countries
- examples of the lessons learned by street child advocates in these countries
- connections to other researchers, along with brief descriptions of their work
- tools to find the organizations that are strongest in a number of fields, from street education to the arts to treating the victims of sexual violence
- a small virtual library where researchers can publish their articles, theses, and dissertations
- An extensive bibliography on youth homelessness
- In collaboration with researchers, Shine a Light publishes "Essays to Understand the Street", a monograph series on the issues that are most important to children living on the street and the organizations that serve them. These essays attempt to bridge the gap between academic researchers and grass-roots social service agencies.
- a bulletin board where reseachers can post questions, float hypotheses, and discuss ideas with other researchers. [Still under construction]
Shine a light has a very small budget, so most of or support for research comes in the form of connections and counselling. However, from time to time we find the money to support a research fellow whose interests correspond with an ongoing SAL project.
We look forward to hearing from all researchers, whether on the bulletin board or by writing to info@shinealight.org.
