Preparing to Volunteer

Finding volunteer work with street children in Latin America is not as easy as anyone would like it to be, so please don't expect a simple process. Even so, these pages will walk you through the process of finding an organization, arranging a volunteer placement, and preparing yourself for what will surely be both a rewarding an a difficult time. Most successful volunteers have followed some version of this five step process.

Please click on each step for more information:

  1. Finding the right program for you
  2. Contacting the organization
  3. Waiting... and arranging the details of the trip
  4. Preparing for volunteer work and for living in Latin America
  5. Returning home and follow-up

To read about all of the organizations with whom Shine a light collaborates (some of which accept voluteers, while others do not), please click here for a geographical list.

If you can't find a good match with your interests through our website, please write info@shinealight.org with a message that includes your interests and skills, your language ability, and what countries interest you. We will try to find a program that will work for you. You might also give a look through the excellent resources at http://www.volunteeringinfo.org, an organization that specializes in helping to find volunteering opportunities at small NGOs.
