Goianian Forum to end sexual exploitation
In 1995, the governments of several Brasilian states joined with a number of NGOs to create a commission against sexual exploitation. Goiânia particularly suffers from extensive trafficking of girls; more girls are kidnapped and taken to Europe as prostitutes from Goiás than from any other state. This problems comes as a result of three factors:
- Goiáss reputation as a home of beautiful women
- highway patterns than make shipping girls to São Paulo fast and easy
- the extensive drug traffic in the region (drug dealers quickly move into other criminal rackets)
The Commission and its representative in Goiânia, the Forum, use various techniques to prevent trafficking girls. They publicize the problem in schools, after school programs, community centers, and favelas. They post warnings in truck stops (a common place of kidnapping). They work with the local and national police to track down traffickers. And they train teachers, social workers, police, and other professionals who work with children how to spot danger and how to get help.
