Liceo Líderes (Leader’s school for the New Millennium)

After several years of political organizing, the Ecuadoria Children’s Congress realized that it needed a school to train leaders. The Liceo Líderes is the result of this initiative.

The Liceo has a fantastic curriculum to teach leadership. The course lasts for three years, with eight cycles of three months each. Subjects of study include:

  1. Strategic planning
  1. Life Projects
  2. Communication
  3. Identity and Diversity in Ecuador
  4. Fundraising
  5. Creativity and Empathy
  6. Laws on human and children’s rights
  7. Group dynamics
  8. Pillars of Democracy

In each subject, education is based on promoting youth as social actors, so there is always a practical component of the lessons. Today the curriculum is available only in Ecuador, but the Liceo hopes to publish it on the internet.

The majority of the students at the Liceo come from youth groups in poor neighborhoods, but there are also some children from the middle class. The connection with poor communities is always strongest, because the students do their internships there. Children who are leaders in their communities are charged $2/month tuition, while other children pay according to their ability. Since the real cost of the program is $50/student/month, the Liceo always needs to raise money.

In 2002, the Liceo had 324 students, with 30-40 in each of Ecuador’s cities. Students are from 9-17 years old, and leaders of school, church, or neighborhood groups. Children of community leaders can also participate.

When her studies begin, each student fills out a self-evaluation form. Each six months, s/he fills out the same form, which thus serves to evaluate the success of the program.
