The methodology that we utilize in the development of our programs is that of Popular Education and Participative Methodology. Through these, we have set four programs in motion for the support of the children of Xalapa. A.- THE STREET CHILD PROGRAM, whose general objective is to give alternatives in terms of housing, nutrition, clothing, and education to the children who have found themselves on the street, in order to contribute to their development as people. We rely on two fundamental spaces: MATRACA CLUB – This is a space created by the children and for the children, where different workshops take place, where they can see a movie or play a sport. There is also a kitchen where the children can prepare and share a meal, and a bathroom where the children can bathe and wash their clothes. MATRACA HOUSE – This is a substitute house for girls in risk of being on the street or who have suffered domestic violence. A married couple create a home-like experience and volunteers help with the care of children, help them with their homework, etc. B.- THE CHILD WORKER PROGRAM, in which the fundamental objective is to promote respect for these children in their workplaces, among their families, and in public places; and to promote their own organization in order for them to collectively work for solutions to their problems. C.- THE PROGRAM FOR FAMILY ATTENTION AND COMMUNITY PREVENTION. The primary reason for this program is so that those children who have lost connections with their families (which is the situation for most of the children living on the street), can reintegrate into them under favorable conditions, as long as this is desired by the child. In addition, this program attempts to support and consolidate the organization of the families of working children as well as the children who have been living on the street. This is accomplished through a process of the family members reflecting on their own reality as a social nucleus, beginning with the realities of each of the family members, but especially of those we serve in this organization. D. THE PRESS AND PUBLICITY PROGRAM. Through this program we seek to create within our society a culture of respect for the children that work and/or live on the streets, opening opportunities for them to express their rights, doubts, and ideas. This program also seeks to publicize our project and the needs it faces. Thanks to the social consciousness that has developed in our society, Matraca counts on a Network of Friends which provides us with support in terms of a variety of material, professional, and technical necessities. Moreover, this network includes people who have provided us with donations in materials, economic support, and services, which are a true pillar of our work. Through these programs, MATRACA is trying to generate a culture of respect for the rights of these children, while at the same time seeking within our society to improve the conditions under which each of these children lives and works. We estimate that we impact the lives of approximately 350 marginalized and otherwise endangered children per year through our programs,, this apart from the wider impacts of our activities in publicizing and promoting the welfare of the children that occupy our streets.
