Ministerios de Amor (Ministries of Love)

Ministerios de Amor administers shelters for street boys and girls in various Mexican cities, including Guadalajara, Cuernavaca, and Mexico City. Educators are always called “tíos” (uncle or aunt), a strong symbol of the program’s attempt to make the shelter feel like a family home.

Education is central to Ministerios’ work, largely as a way to change the “deformed values” that kids learn on the street. “With love, we change them,” the social workers declare. Boundaries and rules also form an important part of this work.

The boys and girls stay in the program as long as they need to. Some manage to reunite with their families quickly, while others live in the shelter for years; one young woman even lives in the shelter while attending college. Families may come every Sunday to see their children.
