Niños del Pacto

Many evangelical programs work with kids in Colombia, but Niños del Pacto must be one of the most interesting. It promotes children’s activism in the church and the community, and attempts to prevent youth homelessness by strengthening communities and families. Today, it works with more than 2000 children in the 17 poorest neighborhoods of Medellín.

Niños del Pact offers a 3 year long curriculum, summarized in 48 books, teaching kids from 3-14 years old. The courses are broken into three parts:

1. Peace: in the first trimester, children learn values of peace, coexistence, and non-violent conflict resolution. The Bible teaches a lot about peace, so the course focuses on the prophets and the words of Jesus -- but it never forgets that the kids live in Medellín, Colombia. To practice their lessons, kids must resolve conflicts in the neighborhoods and in their families. They paint posters and stage political campaigns.

2. Love: in this trimester, kids learn how to serve others. They visit hospitals in order to talk with the sick and old, and they learn how to show how much they love family and friends. In poor Colombian communities, people seldom show affection, so the kids learn how to express their love.

3. Family. This trimester encompasses Christmas. Children learn how a family can and should function, and how to avoid typical family conflicts. They also learn that kids are actors in families, and not just recipients of their parents’ actions.

Niños del Pacto receives its funds through “godparents” in the United States. It has just begun a fish farm, with which it hopes to earn more money.
