Red por los derechos de la infancia en México (Network for Children’s Rights in Mexico)

During the 1990s, many groups tried to formalize a network of NGOs that served children. However, the PRI (Party of the Institutional Revolution) always managed to coopt these networks for is own purposes -- a common experience under the quasi-fascist structure of the PRI, which did not want an independent civil society to exist. None the less, in 2000, Ednica, El Caracol, Ediac, and other progressive NGOs decided to try again. The result is the Network for Children’s Rights in Mexico.

Today 49 organizations participate in the network, as do two local networks (in Jalisco and Juárez). Over 400 other organizations are loosely connected, but the Red does not wish to grow senselessly. It checks all prospective members to make sure they have a critical perspective, based on the rights and protagonism of girls and boys.

The Red works in five areas:

  1. national and state legislation,
  2. teaching other NGOs about the importance of Children’s Rights
  3. changing public attitudes toward children,
  4. connection with international organizations and
  5. encouraging children’s political participation.

The Red also promotes and distributes research, including articles, analyses, and workshops. It also helps children and organizations that want to denounce human rights abuses.

The network provides a daily listserve of news about children in Mexico and the world. To subscribe, write derechosinfanciamex@hotmail.com.
