Proposed Project, Boca Chica

Cartagena, Colombia, has become a tourist destination on the strength of its history and its colonial architecture. Unfortunately, Boca Chica, home of the castles that guarded the bay of Cartagena, remains a poor and desperate town, with many kids in the street.

Ricardo Daza, professor of Art History at the Universidad Tecnológica de Cartagena, hopes to use the castles as a lever to develop the culture and economy of Boca Chica, thus getting kids off the street and giving them pride in their homes. Students of art, architecture, history, and social work will help townspeople to rebuild the town and its culture. Rebuilding the castles will provide both work and pride for the town, and the buildings will later serve as a tourist destination and a cultural center.

Shine a light is advising Mr. Daza as he develops the program.
