SOS-Criança Desaparecida

SOS works in all parts of Brasil to find lost, kidnapped, or missing children. In Goiânia, a city of one million, one child a day is reported missing. In most cities, police and the Conselho Tutelar will search for the child, but there is little long-term follow-up. This collaboration between SOS, the Forum pelo Fim... and the MNMMR-GO works to find out whether children return to their families, why they left, and why they return. In short, it integrates social work and politics with policing.

SOS-Criança Desaparecida networks all of the organizations in Goiânia that serve children, from community centers and churches to schools and the police. It trains teachers and social workers about runaways and street kids, explaining why a child might go “missing” and what options people have.

The program also researches disappearance, finding out what sort of homes children run away from, why they return, and what steps can be taken to prevent the problem or to reintegrate children into their families. They have found that these runaways seldom become street kids, but that many do become prostitutes.
