Which NGOs have good training programmes for their staff?
- Projeto Axé (Salvador, Brasil)
Uses a model based on the psychoanalysis of Jacques Lacan. Their Centro de Formación trains around two hundred staff members who first start out as street educators in order to understand the problems faced by street children. This centre also offers courses for those working in other NGOs, civil servants and personnel in the police department.

- Projeto Miguilim (Bello Horizonte, Brasil)
The teachers working in this project are professionals -- philosophers, historians, economists and those with a literary background. Every week, they meet to discuss education or philosophy in order to share their skills.

- Aldea Juvenil (Goiánia, Brasil)
This NGO is affiliated with the Universidade Católica de Goiás. Their psychology students receive thorough training in education and social work and learn to give up idealised notions of childhood. Their practical training is severe. Because their recommendations are not simple, it is impossible to do this group justice in such a short space. Shine-a-light works with this aldea to diffuse their ideas through the internet and the use of CD-ROMs.

- Ednica (Educación con el Niño Callejero, Ciudad de México)
This NGO trains local networks who are working with street children. Ednica selects a particular NGO in a community that has street children as a community partner, and trains its leaders. For a while, Ednica works together with the NGO. Finally, Ednica maintains a connection with the NGO but only in an advisory role. In this way, Ednica teaches local people (those with small businesses, parish priests, street sellers and and people living on the streets) how to improve the lives of poor children.

- Universidad Santo Tomás, Faculdad de Trabajo Social (Santiago de Chile)
Professors and students have formed a network in the north part of Santiago which works with community groups. 440 students and a dozen professors work in the field and do research and their theses are related to this. The training and assistance to local NGOs and the experience gained by the students is an example that all universities could benefit from.

- El Caracol (Ciudad de México), works with the Universidad Autónoma de México and offers diplomas in street education and human rights of children taking advantage of their profound knowledge of street life.

- One of the best programmes which trains street educators is Polo 3 de Formación del MNMMR (Recife, Brasil). The Polo trains NGO educators in the northeast of Brasil in addition to training professionals in conselhos tutelares, municipalities and defenders of human rights.
