All psychology students at the University of the Sea must do field work during their last years in the university. The majority work with an NGO in Valparaiso, Chile, and many work with street kids or at risk children. Several have formed new NGOs after doing their field work.
The richest experience for the department has been a soup kitchen for street kids and adults in a church close to the city’s port. Almost all of the volunteers are students or alumni of the department. In addition to food, the soup kitchen has begun a theater program. With puppets and acting, the program promotes autonomy, self-esteem, and consciousness. Psychologically, the professors understand the kitchen as “the womb” out of which the child must develop h/er own subjectivity.
