Unión Bíblica

The Unión has been working on issues of poverty and social justice for almost 100 years, and with street kids since 1994. With each passing year, they serve more children with better services. In 2002, the shelter had beds for 39 boys from 6-23 years old, all who had lived on the street for several years.

The shelter provides food and activities for residents and for any street child who wants to come by. The boys constantly play football, but they also must participate in school and in worship services. The day begins at 7 AM with showers, prayers, and breakfast. Morning classes are vocational: baking, pasta-making, computers, and arts and crafts. When a volunteer can give the class, the boys learn English.

Files are based on the “Life Paper,” which records how each boy behaved that day. If the week’s report is good, the boy can go home for the weekend.

The Unión also works on the street. Three outreach workers go out every night at 11 PM, where they talk with all the kids and explain about the shelter. In recent years, street educators have run into many more girls, a worrisome fact, because there are few services for girls. They have also seen that the street is more dangerous in the last several years.
