Though Veracruz is one of Mexicos largest and oldest cities, it has long lacked a program for its many street kids. Shine-a-light is working with Caritas, a well-established agency of the Catholic church, to create a street education project appropriate to the culture and context of this Caribbean city. Caritas is fascinated by the success of Projeto Axé, the groundbreaking art, dance, and music program for street kids in Salvador, Brazil, so Shine-a-light is funding Mala Shah, a student of Public Health at Yale University who worked with Axé, to go to Veracruz and help plan the program. Shine-a-light member organizations throughout Mexico will also offer expertise.
Shine a light turned this work into a white paper, available for others that wish to initiate programs for street children. It is available here: Propuesto para servicios de calle en el Puerto de Veracruz
