Capoeira

Capoeira is an afro-brasilian martial art, better known for its elegance than for its violence. Slaves developed it in the 16th and 17th centuries, combining techniques from all over Africa. To avoid repression from slaveowners, they either practiced in secret or pretended that it was a dance. Today it survives largely in the dance form, with special music, chivalric customs, and formal steps. In Salvador de Bahia, the most African of Brasilian cities, one can see groups of young men (and sometimes women) practicing capoeira on the streets and beaches.
