Shine-a-light Fellowships

Each year, Shine-a-light offers stipends to graduate students in medicine, business administration, psychology, or other fields that can help agencies working with street kids. Previous fellows have worked as medical staff, founded independent agencies, and even managed already existent programs. Fellows recieve

  • $1500 to cover airfare and three months of housing
  • international health insurance
  • placement and training, if necessary

In past years, fellowships have been highly competitive, permitting Shine-a-light to fund fewer than one in ten applicants. We expect that all applicants

  • be fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, or a language indigenous to Latin America
  • have experience with street children
  • have a coherent plan of work

We give preference to candidates who will work in a field affiliated with one of our special projects.

Anyone interested in being funded as a Shine-a-light Fellow should address the following issues in essay form and send them to Kurt Shaw, Shine-a-light Executive Director, at kgshaw@shinealight.org.

  • Personal information: name, address, email, education, work experience
  • Why you want to work with street children
  • What special skills you bring to the work
  • What program you plan to work with (see volunteer resources for help). Have you communicated with this program?
  • Explain the project you would like to conduct

The Shine-a-light Fellows program has no deadlines; instead, we ask that you apply three months before you plan to begin your project. We will interview all finalists by phone. Candidates we are unable to fund will be notified by email.

Because SAL has limited funds for researchers and fellows, we suggest that citizens of the European Union also look for funding through a program of the European commission:
